• 100–120 cm / 39–47" desk (compact or home office): go with Small. It covers your active typing and navigation area without swallowing up a smaller tabletop. If your desk doubles as a quick laptop station, Small holds a 13" laptop and mouse cleanly side by side.

Desk pad, desk mat, or mouse pad?

You will hear these terms thrown around interchangeably, but here is the simple distinction:

• Desk pad & desk mat: the exact same object. "Desk pad" is the standard phrase in the US, while "desk mat" is far more common in the UK. If you're searching for either, you're looking for the same thing — a large mat that sits under keyboard and mouse.
• A mouse pad is a smaller, separate thing. We make those too, in the same leather and the same two colours, and the surface tracks with any optical mouse — including the Apple Magic Mouse, which customers tell us struggles on some other pads. If your keyboard already lives where you like it and you only want leather under your hand, a mouse pad is the wallet-friendly choice.

Understanding the leather & construction

We make these from full-grain, vegetable-tanned Vachetta leather sourced directly from Italy.

"Full-grain" means we use the uppermost layer of the hide with its natural surface texture completely intact. Nothing is sanded down to hide imperfections, and no synthetic grain is embossed on top. "Vegetable tanning" is the traditional, slow process that relies on natural plant tannins rather than chrome salts. It takes longer, but it is precisely what allows natural leather to age gracefully over time instead of simply wearing out.

That ageing has a name: patina — the darkened, softly glossy surface character that vegetable-tanned leather builds from handling, light and time. It's not wear; it's the record of use, and it's the reason old leather looks better than new leather.

On the underside, we line every mat with natural cork. Cork provides a firm, natural grip on wood, glass, or laminate surfaces without using adhesives or glues. It stays firmly anchored while you work, yet lifts away completely clean whenever you need to clear your desk.

Most mass-market desk pads sold online are made from PU (polyurethane) — essentially plastic sheet printed with a fake leather texture. Plastic looks identical from day one until the moment it cracks and peels. Real vegetable-tanned leather does the exact opposite: it marks, softens, and deepens over time into a surface that reflects your specific routine. Which brings us to care.

How to care for your leather desk pad

Vegetable-tanned leather asks for very little effort, but a little basic care keeps it looking its best over years of daily use:

1. Dust it. A dry or barely-damp soft cloth, once a week or whenever you think of it. That's the entire daily regime.
2. Spills: blot, don't rub. Water-based spills (tea, coffee, water) — press a dry cloth on the spill and lift. Rubbing spreads it and pushes it in. Let it air-dry naturally at room temperature, well away from radiators or heat sources.
3. Condition it occasionally. Apply a thin coat of a neutral, uncoloured leather balm or cream every 6 months or so — less is more, and always somewhere hidden first (a back corner) to check the shade. Vachetta darkens slightly with conditioning; that's normal and part of the look.
4. Keep it out of constant direct sun. Vegetable-tanned leather tans, like you do. An hour of afternoon sun is character; a south-facing windowsill every day will leave you with a two-tone pad.
5. Flattening after unboxing: if your mat arrives with a slight curve from its shipping packaging, lay it flat on your desk and place a couple of heavy books on the corners overnight. It will settle quickly, and the cork backing will keep it flat.
6. Dealing with biro ink: the one genuine enemy. Blot fresh ink immediately; don't chase dried ink with solvents — alcohol, wipes and "leather cleaners" with solvents strip the tannage and leave a pale patch worse than the mark. A faint ink line eventually blends into the patina; a solvent scar stays forever.
7. What never to use: keep baby wipes, rubbing alcohol, dish soap, or foaming cleaners far away from your pad. If it strips paint, it will strip leather.

How the leather ages over time

One of the best qualities of genuine Vachetta leather is watching it evolve alongside your work style:

• Weeks 1–4: the surface collects its first subtle marks — a watch buckle pressing down, the ring from a warm coffee mug. These marks look sharp at first, but slowly soften out into the background.
• Months 2–6: high-touch zones — specifically right under your wrists and mouse — begin to burnish. The leather turns slightly darker and noticeably glossier in those areas. Tan deepens significantly, while black develops a rich, deep lustre.
• Year 1 and beyond: the entire mat develops a cohesive patina — an even, warm sheen that records your unique working patterns. This is the entire point of investing in real vegetable-tanned leather: the more you use it, the better it looks.
